Our judge for the September contest is Brian Harding, frontman for the New York based indie band The Hymns. Check out a new Hymns single up on their MySpace page, and if your going to be in the NYC area they are playing 3 non-consecutive dates at Pianos on Ludlow St. in January.
Here are Brian's picks for October's contest winners..
1.chrissy hynde by Jay West
my number one. i've had a crush on her ever since she did brass in pocket on the vh1 fashion awards. she wore a fez and made it look hot.
2. marilyn manson by Jay West
i think he's lost a lot of what was cool about him, but when he had it, he had it, and this photo captures what he had.
3.willie nelson by Jay West
everytime i hear his voice on the radio it makes me smile. blue skies is one of my all time favorite songs.
club kingsnake is now accepting submissions for its 2007 concert photo contest. Last year's contest attracted over 500 photo entries. This year we timed the announcement to occur during Austin's SXSW festival and handed out about 1000 flyers to music photojournalists from around the world.
The 2007 contest will be handled a bit differently, with monthly winners instead of weekly, and with larger prize incentives to the winners. This year's contest prizes are as follows:
Monthly Prizes: (selected at the first of each month)
1st Place - $100 B & H Photo Gift Card
2nd Place - $50 B & H Photo Gift Card
3rd Place - club kingsnake T-Shirt
Year End Prizes: (selected at the beginning of 2008)
1st Place - $2000 Camera Shopping Spree at B & H Photo
2nd Place - Fuji F31 Point N Shoot Camera
3rd Place - $100 B & H Photo Gift Card
So how does it work? Simple - just upload a concert photograph that you have taken yourself (with a camera, not off someone else's web site!) to our photo contest gallery. Make sure to include the artist's name and any other pertinent details such as the camera and lense used in the description. Every month 3 winners will be chosen, and at the end of the year the 3 best will be selected from all the photos submitted throughout the year. This is kind of like American Idol for pictures except our contest judges have been told to keep their rude snickering to themselves.

 Jason Roberts - Celebrity Judge
First Place Winner - photo by Jay West
Second Place Winner - photo by Carlos San Miguel
Third Place Winner - photo by Jay West

Our judge for the October contest is Jason Roberts, guitarist for the New York based indie band The Hymns. Last time we caught up with Jason and the Hymns was outside the Troubadour in West Hollywood where they were finishing up a U.S. tour and getting ready to head into the studio to do their next album. Now with their next album almost ready to release, a new single up on their MySpace page, they have a busy winter ahead of them. Luckily Jason found the time to judge our October photo contest, and Brian Harding the Hymns frontman is currently working on our September contest.
Here are Jason's picks for October's contest winners..
1.photo of tom petty and mike campbell by Jay West
i've been a fan of tom petty and mike campbell for a LONG time. mike is one of the greatest guitarists out there. the cool thing about the two of them is that mike has been with tom since the VERY beginning--even before they were called tom petty & the heartbreakers. when tom does 'solo' albums without the heartbreakers, mike is ALWAYS on the album still and he even produced several of them. i saw tom petty and the heartbreakers two years ago and tom introduced mike as his brother. i think this picture really shows the respect and brotherhood between the two of them.
2. jonathan davis from korn by Carlos San Miguel
i'm not a fan of korn, but this picture is pretty amazing. i love how it's totally black except for jonathan and his mic stand.
3.miranda lambert by Jay West
i love close ups of musicians playing live. you rarely get to see them that close up when you're at a show. this picture definitely captures a moment and yowza! she's pretty hot...

 Jason McMaster - Celebrity Judge
First Place Winner - photo by kathryn
Second Place Winner - photo by Jay West
Third Place Winner - photo by Jay West
|
Our judge for the August contest is Jason McMaster, frontman for Dangerous Toys and Broken Teeth. Jason is a long-time Austin musician whose first band, Watchtower, achieved cult status on the local metal scene in the late 70s, early 80s. His next band, Dangerous Toys, brought Jason to the international stage. Currently fronting Austin's Broken Teeth, Jason and company can be seen polishing their act around town in places like The Red Eyed Fly and Antone's in between national and international tours.
Here are Jason's picks for this month's contest winners..
1. "The Grates" by Kathryn
This is a magical photo for a lot of reasons, yet again has its simplicity about it as well.
The audience is part of the subject again here. They are happy with her, all eyes are on her, the blown confetti and empty smashed plastic cups upon the floor, give a tangible sense to the shot. They also almost frame the shot naturally.
2. "Haley of Paramore" by Jay West
So simple, but great timing.
The color orange on the microphone/her hair against convenient blacks and whites, with the white amp stack/her black and white animal print shirt, etc., bring out the "blown away" by loud music and the pleasure it is giving her, make this a great shot.
3. "Mark of Unseen" by Jay West
It seems that the subject is "in the barracade" feeling the audience, so to speak.
It seems tribal and to have a one-ness, with Mark in the crowd, all making one subject.

Just an update for those of you still waiting for LAST months photo contest results as well as this months. Somehow, someway, with all the thousands of famous musicians in the world we have been unable to find a celebrity to judge the last 2 months contests. It is not for a lack of trying though.
Without resorting to using prior judges, we have asked huge stars, and up and comers, as well as bands I haven't even heard of. We have asked side men, agents, record companies, tour managers, publicists but they either are all on the road, have no internet access, can't be reached or don't even reply. Even celeb's I know personally!
Though I have run through every name in my celebrity phone book twice already, we will continue to ask every day until we find a contest judge but we are sorry for this inconvenience and hope we have it resolved soon. Meantime please keep posting pictures to the contest because we WILL find someone, and if you know a famous musician who would be willing to be a judge, send em our way!

First Place Winner - photo by Gabe
Second Place Winner - photo by Jay West
Third Place Winner - photo by Parker Palmer
|
This month, our celebrity rock star judge is Karen Cuda of the band Nashville Pussy
Here's what Karen had to say about this month's contest winners..
#1 - the first shot of No Use For a Name on the link. I like the round cropping with the lens they used (or however they did that). Nice framing - and always a fan of good b&w shots.
#2 - Morrissey pic. Good use of shadow. I dig people who can pull off good still pics with personality, especially when it's true to the subject.
#3 - the shot of John Moyer spitting water. Nice action shot.
There ya go! Thanks for asking me to be a part of this - flattered that you considered me a "celeb judge."

 Rik Emmett - Celebrity Judge
First Place Winner - photo by Jay West
Second Place Winner - photo by Jay West
Third Place Winner - photo by Gabe

This month, our celebrity rock star judge is Rik Emmett, former front man for the legendary Canadian band Triumph. We talked with him last back in December
Here is what Rik had to say about this months contest entries..
1st - My favorite is Mike Ness of Social Distortion, for composition [the background truss shadow follows the same line as his shoulders] and the blues & grays - plus the insouciance of the emerging pink bubble-gum, with the eye-shadow and the cop badge on the strap [with the hard blue on it!] just makes for a strong image - the capturing of a great moment.
2nd - Ben Brown of Bang Bang Bang. The hair is fantastic, shooting up like flames in the red light, surrounded/reinforced by red in each corner of theframe, giving the image a fiery dramatic flare of the demonic.
3rd - Mad Caddies - the shot over the guitarist's right shoulder, with the trombonist in the hat getting the crowd all riled up. This b & w photo is too dark to be award-winning, but the composition and the documentary moment captured is outstanding - pure rock & roll.
Honorable mentions - the Jay West shots of Steven Tyler and Matt Heafy are classic - clean and powerful. I also really like the feel of the shot of Mike Milligan of the Altar Boyz ...

After much debate, it was decided that the staff has interacted with too many of the photographers in our photo contest, and to eliminate any potential bias we would have a celebrity judge select each of our contest winners. Although we will be unable to provide you with Paula Abdul or Randy Jackson (they were busy picking the next mediocre American Idol contestant), we'll try to pick some interesting judges nonetheless.
This month, our celebrity rock star judge is Paul Collins of The Beat, all the way from Spain. We last caught up with him at SXSW and at least one of the pictures he selected was from SXSW as well. Thanks for helping us pick this month's winner, Paul! He already has a kingsnake t- shirt or he'd be getting another one for helping out. All of our winners this month will also get a t-shirt, as well as some other prizes, once we figure out who they are.

Tie-breaking photo contest judge Alice Cooper photo by clint gilders - staff photographer |
It came down to three.
Three judges, three photographers, and three photographs. Each judge chose, out of the 500+ pictures in the contest, ten photos. There was a total of 27 finalist photos, and of those, only three were selected by more than one judge.
Luckily Alice Cooper was willing to step in settle the issue. Our choice to cast the tie-breaking vote is no stranger to being viewed through the camera's eye. It is now Friday December 29 and it is time to play WTF Friday, the game where you tell us the first 10 songs that come up on your music player when you hit the Random or Shuffle button. At stake is a classic kingsnake.com T-shirt and the a chance to win the monthly grand prize, a black 30Gb video iPod. Also we welcome Metal Blade Records as a contest sponsor this month, so everyone that wins a shirt or iPod will also get a copy of Metal Blade's 2006 Summer Sampler with 18 bands including Cannibal Corpse, Unearth and more!
December will be the last month we run the iPod contest. We have one iPod left, and Microsoft never got back to us when we asked them if they wanted to give away some of their Zune players. It's been fun, and we will find some other contest to play with.
