Tie-breaking photo contest judge Alice Cooper photo by clint gilders - staff photographer |
It came down to three.
Three judges, three photographers, and three photographs. Each judge chose, out of the 500+ pictures in the contest, ten photos. There was a total of 27 finalist photos, and of those, only three were selected by more than one judge.
Luckily Alice Cooper was willing to step in settle the issue. Our choice to cast the tie-breaking vote is no stranger to being viewed through the camera's eye. Having performed onstage since the 60s, he has been photographed thousands of times, in fact appearing in at least one contest entry, and the subject of a concert photo session with our own Clint Gilders. We sent him the three photos and HE made the final selection.
The winner of the 2006 club kingsnake concert photo contest is.....

First Place Winner - photo by Gary Miller |
First place winner is Moondog (aka Gary Miller) for this almost portrait-like photo of James Brown performing at Stubb's Bar B Q in 2006. The judges say that the selection was based primarily on the overall presence and energy of the photo, its representation of the artist, and the technical merits such as focus, use of available light, depth of field, and framing. One would also be hard pressed to overlook the historical value such an image represents. For his efforts Gary, will enjoy a $1200 shopping spree on us at Precision Camera here in Austin. Congratulations Gary!
Second Place Winner - photo by Jay West | The second place winner is Jay West for the cloud photo of CeLo of Gnarls Barkley at this years ACL Fest in Austin's Zilker Park. Jay, you came closer than you will ever know to taking first place with this picture. Jay wins a little Fuji F30 Point-N-Shoot, for a nice little backup camera to take with him on the "no photo pass" nights. The judges did in fact like the clouds in his CeLo's eyes. |
Third place winner is all the way from Poland. I don't know if they have a Best Buy in Poland but I am sure we can find some way to accommodate our winner, but we only know him as NDO. Anyway, he took a most excellent picture of Krzysztof Grabowski of the Polish band Strachy na Lachy. Congrats NDO!
We will be announcing some "special mention" awards later this week, no prizes involved but much fun, please check back! | Third Place Winner - photo by NDO |
