The Kool Haus (Toronto, Ontario)
Dropkick Murphys are a group that have flown under the radar for far to long. You can't watch the Boston Red Sox play in a World Series without hearing one of their songs and DKM were all over Martin Scorsese's Oscar winning The Departed, so everyone has heard their music they just don't know who they are!
This is a band that can't be labeled Punk or Folk because they are a combination of both!
I have had the experience of watching the band grow over the years, having seen them in concert at least 5 times since 1998 on The Warped Tour as well as opening a show for Motorhead. This time was different, everything was perfect. The sold-out show never slowed down, kicking out songs like "God Willing" and "The State Of Massachusetts" from there 6th and newest CD The Meanest of Times as well as playing the classic "Skinhead on the MTBA", "The Gang's All Here" and "Tessie". I even had a chance to shoot the sh*t with The Mahones' (a band that DKM knows all too well) lead singer Finny McConnell who was checking out the show before they played The Hide Out later on in the night.
If you ever wanted to see a band with two lead singers and three more singing back-up, a volley of instruments such as Mandolins, Accordions, Banjos, Tin Whistle, Acoustic & Electric Guitars and the ever famous Bag Pipes DKM is the band. It was also one of the loudest shows I've seen….it took me 3 days to get the hearing back. All in all I would have to say that the latest DKM show will go down in history as one of the best shows I have ever seen!!!
I can't wait to see where the "Boys From Boston" take us next.

I'm no Scrooge. I love the holidays, love presents and shopping and holiday parties and trees and lights and wreaths.
I also love Christmas music, and if that means Bing Crosby singing "White Christmas," I'm there. My favorite Christmas recording ever is probably "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day" by Harry Belafonte.
Not so much with top 40 pre-packaged holiday songs for me, though -- I prefer either straight-up traditional or a little bit alternative, something with an edge or a twist.
I'll post my iPod's "Holiday" playlist after the jump, but first, a new CD of holiday music by Mindy Smith was released last month, and it's got that slight edge mixed with tradition that I love best this time of year.
My Holiday isn't alt and edgy in the kind of way that means your parents will cry if you play it during Christmas dinner. It also isn't so sweet and bland that you'll go into a diabetic coma after the pumpkin pie, either. The fact that it treads that line is entirely due to its spare production and the warm beauty of Smith's voice. Smith is is generally considered a folk/country singer and the CD claims it's folk, but this holiday CD is more like alternative supper club music with hints of jazz, pop, and country weaving through.
There's both original material and classics, with a taste of her Nashville roots on the standout track "Follow the Shepherd Home" (amusingly typo'd on the CD's track listing as "Follow the Shepherd Dog"). Alison Krauss sings along on a delicate "Away in a Manger," the country-tinged "Silver Bells" actually manages to stand out from the other 45,679 versions of this song that have been recorded over the years, and her poppy (and I mean that in the pure 60s girl singer way) "I'll Be Home for Christmas" is probably my favorite cut.
So, what's on my iPod Holiday playlist? It's under the jump....

Kevin Dubrow of Quiet Riot at Antone's - more photos... photo by jeff barringer - staff photographer |
Blabbermouth is reporting that Kevin Dubrow, frontman for the legendary Quiet Riot has been found dead in his Las Vegas Home. The news was broken by longtime friend Michael Politz of The Vegas Eye
I am sad to have to report the passing of one of my closests friends, Kevin DuBrow. DuBrows body was found by friends, on Sunday in his Las Vegas home.
Club kingsnake recently covered Quiet Riot's show at Austin's Antone's niteclub back in July. Kevin and Quiet Riot were instrumental in helping metal break into the mainstream in the 80's. He will be missed by metal fans world wide.
Jason McMaster former frontman for Austin's Dangerous Toys and whose band Broken Teeth opened for Quiet Riot's Antone's gig had this to say...
I heard he had a crazy set at the Rocklahoma metal festival this year. He was really in his element. He is going to be missed. A lot of people loved that guy.
We will post more information here as it becomes available.

I was surprised when I saw Marky Ramone's show listing pop up on Pollstar. The last time I saw Marky was in 1983 at the second and last Ramones show I ever attended. The first time I saw Marky I met him backstage in 1978 at the Ramones show at the Armadillo World Headquarters. Road To Ruin had just been released and at 15 I lied my way backstage posing as a budding journalist writing for the high school newspaper. I interviewed Johnny and eventually did start a little music fanzine that lasted all of 4 or 5 issues based on that interview and a couple others. I spent all night backstage with the band, finally getting kicked out by their tour manager after the show. It was a magical night for me, one that left an impression on myself and my family as I eventually dragged my brothers into my passion for all things Ramone.
I had hoped to score an interview with Marky Ramone before his set at Emo's in Austin, but it was just not to be. I had exchanged email's back and forth with his wife and then phone calls with his tour manager. Pressed for time Marky literally was in and out only long enough to perform and then headed off down to the valley for a couple shows in McAllen and in Brownsville. I was able to get a photo pass from his tour manager but with the lighting issues in Emo's small room, the packed crowd, and Marky's stage placement in the back my shots were marginal at best. I didn't want to use a flash (SERIOUS faux pax in music photography), so I took what I could and then stood back and watched.

The Frank Erwin Center (Austin, Texas)
Also: Lovedrug, Shiny Toy Guns, Yellowcard
Ending their fall tour in Austin, local boys made good Blue October brought a bunch of good bands with them to the Frank Erwin Center, they themselves playing a 2 hour set for their hard core local fans. I had shot the band last November at Stubb's BarBQ ( See the review here) but at the time frontman Justin Furstenfeld was somewhat tied to a stool in the middle of the stage, the result of a broken leg. I was glad to get the chance to shoot them again so soon now that his leg had healed and he was not limited to supporting himself with his mic stand and hobbling about the stage using it as a crutch.
Arriving at 6:30 this would be an early show, with 4 bands total, the first, Lovedrug, scheduled to hit the stage at 6:50. I had some guests coming as well, 14 year old nephew Blake and his 10 year old brother Jack who was attending his very first concert. This was a great show to start him with too. Thanks to the guys at the Erwin Center we fixed them up with a couple mezzanine tickets which were perfect because at 10 Jack is still too short to see over the audience from the floor. Meeting up with them in the parking lot we headed up to willcall to get their tickets. Reminding the elder Blake that he was to watch out for Jack I left them waiting in the line to get in. For the whole show they were to be on their own but knowing how many security guards and ushers the Erwin Center had in place they were probably safer there than any other venue in town.

Antone's (Austin, Texas)
Also: Passafire, The Expendables
With the response I have gotten to my Tool at the Frank Erwin Center review, maybe I need to start trashing a few more bands around here :)
I can't do it with these guys though, they were all good, and the headliner, Pepper, has an incredible stage presence and rapport with it's audience, turning them into participants in the event rather than just disconnected observers.
The line to get into Antone's still stretched around the side of the building when I arrived, but as most of them were hoping forlornly to buy tickets, they were turned around at the door and the line moved rather quickly. I had been invited by the guys at Earshot media to cover the show and when my turn came at the door, they found me on the guest list and ushered me in. It was still a good 20 minutes or so before the first band, Passafire, was slated to hit the stage so I ambled over to the bar to grab a Coke and banter with the staff. The club was already packed so I had to work my way to the bar, trying not to clobber anyone with my camera bag. Downing the beverage at the bar so as not to have to wedge my way through the crowd with a drink in my hands, I tossed the empty cup in the trash and continued to the back of Antone's.

Our judge for the September contest is Brian Harding, frontman for the New York based indie band The Hymns. Check out a new Hymns single up on their MySpace page, and if your going to be in the NYC area they are playing 3 non-consecutive dates at Pianos on Ludlow St. in January.
Here are Brian's picks for October's contest winners..
1.chrissy hynde by Jay West

2. marilyn manson by Jay West
i think he's lost a lot of what was cool about him, but when he had it, he had it, and this photo captures what he had.
3.willie nelson by Jay West
everytime i hear his voice on the radio it makes me smile. blue skies is one of my all time favorite songs.
club kingsnake is now accepting submissions for its 2007 concert photo contest. Last year's contest attracted over 500 photo entries. This year we timed the announcement to occur during Austin's SXSW festival and handed out about 1000 flyers to music photojournalists from around the world.
The 2007 contest will be handled a bit differently, with monthly winners instead of weekly, and with larger prize incentives to the winners. This year's contest prizes are as follows:
Monthly Prizes: (selected at the first of each month)
1st Place - $100 B & H Photo Gift Card
2nd Place - $50 B & H Photo Gift Card
3rd Place - club kingsnake T-Shirt
Year End Prizes: (selected at the beginning of 2008)
1st Place - $2000 Camera Shopping Spree at B & H Photo
2nd Place - Fuji F31 Point N Shoot Camera
3rd Place - $100 B & H Photo Gift Card
So how does it work? Simple - just upload a concert photograph that you have taken yourself (with a camera, not off someone else's web site!) to our photo contest gallery. Make sure to include the artist's name and any other pertinent details such as the camera and lense used in the description. Every month 3 winners will be chosen, and at the end of the year the 3 best will be selected from all the photos submitted throughout the year. This is kind of like American Idol for pictures except our contest judges have been told to keep their rude snickering to themselves.
The 2007 club kingsnake concert photo contest is now live! Post your images at http://clubpix.kingsnake.com/index.php?cat=521

club.kingsnake.com contributor Andrew Stricko has just signed on as drummer for Canadian buzz band Hello Operator. 19 year old Andrew was formerly the driving force behind upstarts Make It Your Business. With that band on hiatus Andrew has set his sites on bigger and better things, and he told me:
i am beyond excited for this, it's been too long since i've been playing shows. as for the tour, they are calling it a "warm up" just to get everything down and tightened in a show setting...

The Academy Is...
The Guvernment (Toronto, Ontario)
November 9,2007
Also: Sherwood and The Rocket Summer
"Girls...Girls...Girls...." comes to mind as I drive by the Guvernment looking for a parking spot. Hundreds of girls in the rain, lined up around the block, waiting for the doors to open. What are they waiting for? The latest crop of teen idols of course.
Cobra Starship and Armor For Sleep were to be among the opening acts, but it appears that Cobra Starship had some issues crossing the border into Canada. Armor For Sleep's story is more tragic. While driving to the show their trailer decided to separate from the bus and careen across the highway destroying most of their gear. Directly behind them was The Academy Is.. whose bass player witnessed the accident. Amazingly no one was hurt. Armor For Sleep aptly put it:
because we dont have this stuff today we had to cancel the toronto show...but its only that...stuff. We are all soooo unbelievably happy that the only thing mangled in this whole disaster was stuff not dudes.

Austin is just too big for me to handle by my lonesome. Clint has been getting help up in Toronto from contributors Stewart Stick and James "Trash" Sampson, and now I have someone to help me pick up the slack here in Austin. Jaime Butler, a budding new music photographer, has shot a couple shows for us now and we are glad to have her on board as a full staff member. I first met Jaimie at the Army of Anyone show at La Zona Rosa earlier this year and then ran into her again at the Meat Puppets.

Our judge for the October contest is Jason Roberts, guitarist for the New York based indie band The Hymns. Last time we caught up with Jason and the Hymns was outside the Troubadour in West Hollywood where they were finishing up a U.S. tour and getting ready to head into the studio to do their next album. Now with their next album almost ready to release, a new single up on their MySpace page, they have a busy winter ahead of them. Luckily Jason found the time to judge our October photo contest, and Brian Harding the Hymns frontman is currently working on our September contest.
Here are Jason's picks for October's contest winners..
1.photo of tom petty and mike campbell by Jay West
i've been a fan of tom petty and mike campbell for a LONG time. mike is one of the greatest guitarists out there. the cool thing about the two of them is that mike has been with tom since the VERY beginning--even before they were called tom petty & the heartbreakers. when tom does 'solo' albums without the heartbreakers, mike is ALWAYS on the album still and he even produced several of them. i saw tom petty and the heartbreakers two years ago and tom introduced mike as his brother. i think this picture really shows the respect and brotherhood between the two of them.
2. jonathan davis from korn by Carlos San Miguel
i'm not a fan of korn, but this picture is pretty amazing. i love how it's totally black except for jonathan and his mic stand.
3.miranda lambert by Jay West
i love close ups of musicians playing live. you rarely get to see them that close up when you're at a show. this picture definitely captures a moment and yowza! she's pretty hot...

The Frank Erwin Center (Austin, Texas)
Wow.
I am going to get hate mail after this one.
My long hard search is now over. We have a winner.
In 1977 I saw the original Black Sabbath on their tour supporting the album Never Say Die. Their backup band Van Halen, blew doors, which was only the start of Black Sabbath's problems. They also blew the amps. Ozzy, who was still loaded at the time, was pretty unintelligible to begin with, and having blown amps didn't help. The sound was lousy, the performance was lousy, and after 7 songs or so, even Sabbath gave up, cutting their show short and walking offstage disgusted. Not too long after that the band broke up.
Worst performance I had ever seen. Even worse than watching Christopher Cross do bad 70's rock covers in my high school gym. Until last night.

Legendary Texas band the Toadies will be performing 5 reunion concerts across the state with stops in Austin, Houston, San Antonio, Corpus Christi and Grand Prairie in December as well as 3 additional just announced dates in Louisiana and Arkansas.
After releasing their debut album, Rubberneck 1994 on Interscope, to both wide critical acclaim and commercial success, achieving Platinum status in 1995, issues with their record company delayed the release of the second disc, Hell Below / Stars Above, until 2001 and 5 months later the band broke up, leaving fans worldwide wanting more.
After 2 reunion shows in 2006, the reformed band played several Texas dates in the spring of 2007, including 2 sold out nights at Stubb's BarBQ in Austin right before the start of it's annual SXSW festival. We got a chance to speak with Vaden Todd Lewis, the distinctive voice that helps set the Toadies apart from any other band. The audio interview is after the jump

Peterborough, Ontario. November 10, 2007
Also: DieNoSystem
You know the story.... Dave "Brownsound" Baksh was in multi platinum, super gynormous Sum41, became disenchanted with the music, the industry, etc. Brownsound left that other band in 2006 and got back to work with his cousin Vaughn Lal in, what had until then been a side project, Brown Brigade.
A myspace bulletin by promoter Robbie Veale tipped me to the November 10th show at the Underdog. Lucky, since there was little other promotion.
With James "Trash" Sampson on board for an interview and Stewart "such a good photog it makes you sick" Stick along for some lighting and photo help we headed to the Legendary Red Dog to meet Brown Brigade and learn what's what in their world.
What a cool bunch of guys. The interview went great. So great that it was hard to tell when the conversation ended and the interview began. I just started rolling video, and figured Trash would do some kind of intro. Check it out below. After that, Trash also did an interview with the opening act, and local up-and-comers DieNoSystem. They've been doing some cool stuff for charities and in movies, and did a great job with one of their first press junkets.
