The last time From Autumn to Ashes made their way through my neck of the woods I had arranged to cover the show. Dumb ass that I am, I decided on a little snooze before making the drive to Toronto and only after did I realize that this was an early all-ages show. Doh!!
As soon as I caught wind of their return I again made arrangements to cover the show. Come hell or high water I would be there.
Opening the show was my perennial favourite, Kingston's I Hate Sally. How they ended up stuck in the opening slot I'll never understand. They of course killed. They will one day rule the world. Somehow I'm struck dumb each time I attempt to speak to the diminutive front woman with the big voice. "...Um...Uh...Hi.....Can I buy a shirt......ok... See ya..." Just call me Casanova.

Next on the bill was Toronto's The End. This was my third time seeing them and I have yet to dig their music. If the crowd's reaction was any indication, I'm in the minority. They do have an interesting live show with vocalist Aaron Wolff dividing his time between bull horn, floor tom and keyboards. The metal/mathcore purveyors easily had the largest and and most vocal audience of the night. Just not my bag.
Following The End was my introduction to Buffalo, New York's It Dies Today (IDT). Metalcore-Post Hardcore-Screamo/Emo-whatever the fuck you wanna call it is music I'm really getting off on these days. Screaming vocals, some death metal growls, some nice melodic bits, and musicianship a hefty notch above your average punk bands are what set this breed apart. This is a band I'll go out of my way to see again.
Now, finally From Autumn to Ashes. Similar to IDT but just that much more polished, edgey and brutal. You don't expect that voice and intensity to come from a guy named Francis. They were as good as their album had led me to believe.
A good bill, a good night. Glad I didn't sleep through this one.
Thanks to Katie at Vagrant for giving me another shot at FATA. You're a peach with pink hair and a killer tan.
