Tim McCrath of Rise Against performing October 3rd in Toronto photo by Jessica Cunningham - Club Kingsnake Staff Photographer |
The band Rise Against has canceled their Austin and Houston shows, tonight and tomorrow respectively at the Austin Music Hall and the Verizon Wireless Theaters due to vocalist Tim McCrath's voice loss, according to his publicist. The band was headlining with openers Alkaline Trio, Thrice and Gaslight Anthem. No word on whether this will impact their shows in San Diego or Hollywood, which were the next stops on the tour.
Refunds for this show are available at the point of purchase so get them now as it does not appear the tickets will be honored for a future show. The band says that it "apologizes to their Austin and Houston fans and looks forward to seeing them next year".

"Wow man - thats a cool job - How do I get back there!"
There is something pretty cool about hearing that at all the shows I go to. Being one of "those guys" on the other side of the barrier, having a tour laminate instead of a ticket, hanging out backstage at the buffet with the rock stars, getting the primo seats, the comped parking. And sometimes you even get your own security escort. Its pretty awesome to look out and see that you are the only person between the band and 80,000 paying audience members. This is so beyond front row seats, the feeling is an indescribable buzz. The lights come on and then "Wham!" there is Metallica, or Rush, or Priest, or Slayer playing right there 5 feet from you. Its an amazing experience, a rush better than any drug. And it can all be yours!
club kingsnake is looking for music writers, photographers, and editors worldwide and while we can't pay you or cover your expenses, we can promise you a job with some of the best fringe benefits in the world. Free CD's, DVD's and other band swag, great concert seats, and sometimes a chance to meet your favorite bands. All you need is access to the internet, a real interest in music, and enthusiasm. We provide the access to the shows and the discs. We have the following jobs open:
Assignment Editor - Concerts - Coordinates between publicists/venues and our staff to assign coverage of concerts

Writer - Concert Reviews - Attend and review concerts you select
Writer - CD/DVD Reviews - review recorded materials as available
Writer - Daily News - Provide daily news updates to the site based on incoming press releases/wire reports
Videographer/Interviewer - Attend concerts and interview bands
Whether you live in a big town, or a small one, a major city or out in the middle of nowhere if you want to write about or be involved in the rock and roll business we have a job for you.
In the last 3 years I have gotten to meet and/or photograph hundreds of my favorite performers some of them literally legends (see my own personal list at jeffbarringer.com. Now it's your chance!

Stubb's Bar-B-Q (Austin, Texas)
Also: Passafire, Supervillains
Yesod Williams prediction that Pepper would be playing Austin more often seems to be coming true as they brought the brand new Law Records tour through Austin on Saturday, along with label mates Passafire and Supervillains.
Considering I had just covered Pepper at Stubb's back in April I REALLY didn't need another 1000 recent pictures to have to review, edit, and post but they put on a show, photograph well, and every show they do is packed wall to wall with hot single co-eds. And I mean packed. All of them seemingly intent on nailing a buff, surfing Hawaiian band member. We're not talking pre-teen boy band fantasy crushes, with lots of squealing and shrieking here, we are talking pre-cougar pack stalking by gangs of well armed 20 something women on a mission. Hundreds of em.
Not that the band does anything to discourage such behavior. All their songs are either about smoking dope or having sex, all their onstage banter is about same, and the band's road crew was said to be handing out passes to the aftershow to cute women that could pass a "semi-sobriety" test. With bus call at 5:00am Pepper was in no hurry to leave town.
But I digress.

MGMT.......... Huh? Where's the photos? Well, as we arrived at the Sound Academy shortly before our photo call for MGMT the lovely Live Nation rep told us she had some good news and some bad news. The bad news is that no-one gets to shoot the MGMT show, the good news is that we still get to shoot Beck. I'd actually been planning on boycotting the Beck shoot due to the "We own your photos in perpetuity throughout the universe" release foisted on us by his publicist. So, I caved and signed the damn release and shot Beck. With gas prices the way they are I wasn't gonna go home with an empty camera.
MGMT's set was fantastic. Psychedelic/electro-pop/country/rock with a dreamy frontman. I really dug their set much more than the part set I saw at the recent Virgin Festival.
This is where I'd put some usually put some MGMT photos. That aint gonna happen. Lets hope they fit back into those britches they seem to have gotten too big for and lets some photogs in again.
The headliner was Beck. With a spartan stage only adorned with their instruments and amps, and lights like you'd see on an old time movie set Beck and his band came on stage and launched into Loser. Another photog and later I discussed how truly cool it was to be in the pit shooting Beck while he played Loser.
Of course, once we photographers had shot our three songs the real lightshow began. A large screen at the back of the stage was covered in what looked like about a million LEDs and was displaying this crazy abstract video throughout the set.
From beginning to end the set was tight and kept it's momentum. At no point did I find myself staring at my shoes or counting the cracks in the wall. I arrived as a casual fan and left with a new found interest in Beck and his music.

The Backyard(Austin, Texas)
“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness …”
…and so on. Sorry, fellow rockers, I know the last thing you expect to read on a music site is Charles Dickens, but Saturday’s Widespread Panic show at The Backyard was truly a tale of two sets.
Saturday was the second night of back-to-back shows put on by Widespread Panic at the Backyard. A spacious, open venue, The Backyard is one of the best places in Austin to see live music. Sadly, though, development around the venue has forced it to move several miles down the road, so this would be one of the last shows at the location, and it proved the perfect venue for the jam band’s music.

La Zona Rosa(Austin, Texas)
Also: Govinda, Beats Antique
All that was missing was a copy of Wired Magazine, naked muddy people, and a large burning effigy.
San Francisco based Musician / Producer / DJ Lorin Ashton brought his freeform project Bassnectar as well as some really really big bass cabinets and a smoke machine that the military could use to hide a division of tanks, to what had to have been a sold out crowd at La Zona Rosa. Bolstered by a late set that allowed the camp followers of Widespread Panic to make it after their show ended out at The Backyard, the line for tickets was still 50 strong at 11:30pm, long after his thumping spiraling beats had started, but far from the 2:00am end time for the set.
The show was very much a throwback to the Rave parties of the 90's for me, the lights, frenetic dancing, colorful costumes of the audience members, all reminders of the days before CNN covered Burning Man.
Opening the show were Oakland, Ca. based DJs Beats Antique followed by Austin based DJ Govinda, both longtime stalwarts on their respective scenes. Govinda's set was further highlighted by having a belly dancer join him onstage. With all the smoke it was very difficult to take pictures so I spent most of my time wheeling about in a haze induced stupor along with the rest of the audience, letting the rhythm and the beat take us wherever it wanted. It's not often that bands invite their fans to bring large heavy metallic objects to their concerts, lest they be pelted with same later, but Widespread Panic is willing to take that risk. Their 2-day show out at Austin's Backyard this weekend is now a food drive for the Capital Area Food Bank here in Austin. In it's 27th year the food bank is desperate to replenish it's stocks of food after Central Texas was overwhelmed with refugees from Hurricane Ike, and to get ready for the holiday season. Everyone attending is urged to bring USEFUL non-perishable items to the show. (no showing up with a case of 40 year old canned turtle meat you found in your uncle Fester's closet.)
Speaking of The Backyard, Sundays show by The Roots and Gym Class Heroes has moved from The Backyard over to La Zona Rosa. Please mark your schedules accordingly.
In more Direct Events/The Backyard related news, the closing party for this West Austin venue has been extended to 2 days to make it a real blowout. On Saturday October 25th the bill includes Driver F, Alpha Rev, Del Castillo, White Ghost Shivers, The Boxing Lesson, Los Gallos, Dremnt The End, High on Hot Dogs, Joker and DrumJam. Sunday October 26th's bill features Willie Nelson, Ruthie Foster, Grupo Fantasma, Kelly Willis, The Gourds, Carolyn Wonderland, Nakia & His Southern Cousins, Lucky Tomblin Band and Elizabeth Wills.
Tickets for all these shows are available at GETTIX outlets including UT CO-OP, RunTex locations & Waterloo Records, charge by phone at 1-866-443-8849 or buy tickets on the web at www.directevents.net

Stubb's BarBQ(Austin, Texas)
Also: Black And White Years
In this time of financial uncertainty, negative political ads, and banal sound bites, who can we trust to lead our country into a new, better era? For those fed up with both candidates and their empty promises, why not look to established musical figures? Enter the Presidents of the United States of America.
No, I'm not talking about Bill Clinton's jazz trio, featuring George H.W. Bush on drums and Jimmy "Peanut Oil" Carter on standup bass, but the alternative rock group who made it big in the music scene 13 years ago singing about peaches and lumps.
Appropriate, then, they play Stubb's in Austin, TX, a month before the election. Now, political parallels such as these may be too easy for a writer like myself to make, but seeing as I showed up late to the show, I'm not exactly what you call 'presidential material.' Oops, I did it again. Sorry, I'll stop.
Local band Black & White Years was already on stage upon my arrival. An indie electro-rock group, they sounded like a rocked-out version of the Talking Heads. (I found out later that Jerry Harrison of the Talking Heads produced their self-titled album. Point: Greg.). The band played a solid set as the crowd steadily grew, and they were clearly enjoying their music, but the mood changed dramatically as soon as the Presidents stepped on stage.

I've always liked Journey. I'll admit it. In fact I think everyone likes Journey. Those damned catchy, sappy songs with great guitar solos. They've certainly received more press in the last few years thanks to the use of "Don't Stop Believin" in the Sopranos series finale and the hiring of the You Tube sensation Arnel Pineda from the Philippines . Before the show I checked out the footage of Arnel singing with his old cover band The Zoo. Arnel can sing exactly like Steve Perry but you'd be surprised to hear how well he can impersonate other singers. He nails Bon Jovi, Boston, STP, Queen and lots of others.
The big test would be hearing him live, especially after Journey canceled the prior night because Arnel had a cold. Well, he was perfect. Journey put on a fantastic show with lots of energy and great interplay, as did their openers Cheap Trick and Heart. It's refreshing to hear great live singers in this era of "Auto Tune". The crowd loved every minute of it - especially the large Filipino crowd! Hopefully Journey can keep Arnel longer than their past few singers. They start another leg of their tour in November so check them out if they're headed your way.

Stubb's BarBQ(Austin, Texas)
Also: Graveyard, The Sword
A sold out crowd greeted Clutch at their Austin appearance at Stubb's, but each band on the tour brought their own hardcore following so it was sometimes tough to tell who was the headliner.
Starting out with night was the band Graveyard from Sweden, a 4 piece stoner rock band that sounded straight out
of the Blue Cheer school of psychedelic metal. Huge overblown epic metal masterpieces with a distinct late 60's Cream/Yardbirds blues feel. The only thing missing was the crude 60's blacklight posters and lava lamps.
They didn't have much of a stage presence, not interacting with the crowd, or each other for that matter, intensely focusing on playing, but I don't think the crowd was there for a Van Halen style show. With only a short 4 song, 30 minute set, I was kind of disappointed when it ended and I know I wanted to hear more. I guess that is what they make headphones, mp3 players, and fractal programs for (Dude, those colors are neat...you got any cheetos?).
