Stubb's BarBQ(Austin, Texas)

The Lions
The Toadies are definitely back and hitting on all 8 cylinders if their series of sold out shows at Austin's Stubb's BarBQ is any indicator. Touring to promote their first studio release since 2001's
Stars Above/Hell Below, their new disc
No Deliverance picks up pretty much where The Toadies left off 7 years ago sound wise.
Fans began packing the venue as soon as doors opened and it was pretty full by the time I got there. Badging up at the box office I headed in and stopped by the 101x booth to say hello to Trevin, one of their DJ's. After chatting about Austin music politics (there are no politics in Austin music!) I headed off and worked my way to the pit. Jay and Gary would be shooting one of the other shows, but there were still 6 of us scheduled to shoot so the pit could become tight.
Opening for The Toadies are an Austin band I hadn't seen before called The Lions. They had an exciting and frantic set with vocals that reminded me of Zack De La Rocha in timbre, though not in meter, with more of a singing style rather than a rap. Talking with one of the bartenders who had seen them a number of times he thought they were better in a club, and I had to agree. They seemed to be one of those bands that needed to be in an enclosed venue to get that energy that feeds back from the club and the crowd. In that environment they would feed off that energy and just get more and more wound up. In an open air venue it all just keeps radiating out away from them. Still they had a great set and if The Toadies aren't careful they may create a monster by having them open their gigs. Crunchy.
The Toadies set itself was certainly no slacker.
Austin has always been kind of a second home to The Toadies and they have always had a solid base of support here. Their new CD is the number one CD at Waterloo in Austin and has been since it released. This time there were no sound issues, no crowd issues, and with a nice breeze not even any temperature issues as the band worked it's way through its song list. Even the new songs seemed to have fans singing along, but classics like "Backslider", "Tyler", and "Possum Kingdom" still proved to be the crowd favorites.
