I am going to need a whole new wardrobe to shoot gigs at the Bass Concert Hall it seems, as I was way under-dressed for it's re-opening night show featuring John Legend and Estelle. The crowd was dressed to the nines and I felt very out of place in a pair of jeans and Motorhead t-shirt, dragging my weather beaten camera bag around the nicely, newly renovated hall.
It must be hard to live up to a moniker like "Legend" but John Legend easily proved he was up to task of living up to his "Legend". Entering through the crowd, stage right, he stepped out of the audience on stage to give a solid performance to the packed house. With a fine acoustic mix his show seemed flawless as he worked the crowd and rolled through his catalog of songs like a master showman. Even the duet with Estelle came off perfectly.
Unfortunately Estelles own opening set was flawed by an audio mix that seemed excessively boomy for the hall. Luckily this was the only issue as her actual performance, as well as that of her backup singers and performers was excellent and certainly up to par for the night.
All in all this was an excellent show for the re-opening night of Bass and I hope to get to shoot more gigs at this tasty venue. I wonder where I put my black tie...
