The rain and cloud cover from Hurricane Dolly long since swallowed by the Texas heat, metalheads from all over Central Texas converged on the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Selma Texas to check out the Mayhem Festival. Headlined by the masked metal men of the great plains, Slipknot brought along a dozen or so other bands representing a variety of harder edged music including Disturbed, Dragonforce, and Mastodon.
I got invited down to the show and spent the day broiling in the sun while checking out some neat acts like Walls of Jericho, Black Tide, and Austin's own Powderburn. I got to spend some time talking with Ivan of Five Finger Death Punch, as well as talking with Airbourne's frontman Joel O'Keefe. Let me tell you Airbourne's performance can be best summed up with one word - spooky. I saw AC/DC with Bon Scott in 1979 and I can tell you that Joel O'Keefe is Bon Scott re-incarnated. The resemblance, the performance, is absolutely uncanny and sent chills down my spine despite the 110 degree heat. If you ever wanted to see AC/DC when they were young, this is what they were like, sans Angus's knee pants.
Thanks to the guys in Slipknot and all the bands at the Mayhem Festival, as well as the crew at Live Nation for inviting us out. Our next show at the Verizon in Selma, on August 24th, should be a rocker, with Judas Priest, Heaven and Hell, Testament and the legendary Motörhead. Tickets are still available, be sure to wear your leather for this one.
