Flipnotics(Austin, Texas)
Flipnotics, the uber hip hippie coffee kahvehane in the heart of south Austin's artist-poet district along Barton Springs, seems to be turning into something of a second home for Jesse Sublett. Once again they hosted another of his acoustic performances last night, and despite the stifling 100 degree heat outside, and performing in a small un-airconditioned room to a packed audience of about 35, he sounded great and everyone there seemed to enjoy themselves, despite being drenched in sweat.
Jesse Sublett, former frontman for Austin's 70s punk band the Skunks, is kind of Austin's version of David Byrne. Musician, author, and producer, Jesse has kept himself quite busy since the Skunks' days of playing Austin's infamous and long dead clubs like Raul's, Club Foot, and Duke's Royal Coach, or opening for bands like the Ramones at the dillo. Besides playing in other bands such as Flex, he has penned the acclaimed Martin Fender mystery novels set in the Austin music scene, as well as working on a number of film and video projects out in Los Angeles. Currently he is involved in a project with Darden Smith here in Austin, a play called "Marathon" that is being workshopped at the University of Texas. Darden will be doing the music and there are plans to incorporate a live orchestra in the work.
Long returned to Austin, Jesse is working up a bunch of new songs as well as polishing a few old ones, after deciding to return to playing live a bit more frequently. Last night he performed several new songs as well as a number of favorites such as "The Ballad of Jeanne Harris" and "Pissing In The Wind." Once again he broke out the big bass to cover "St. James Infirmary" before returning to the guitar. Closing his set by inviting his cousin Jeff Jacoby from San Antonio onstage to play guitar, he did a great cover of Velvet Underground's "I'm Waiting for the Man" with him. Unfortunately he only played a part of "Earthquake Shake," the only Skunks material of the night, but he did let us hear a song he wrote for Kathy Valentine of the Go-Gos. Watch for Jesse to play again soon.
