Electro-Punk Pioneers DEVO headlined the BMI Showcase at the Austin Music Hall during this years SXSW and they brought their whole stage setup. Even the plastic flowerpot hats. Being at this show you felt like you were immersed in one of those 80's videos, part of some way cool 3D mashup. No, it wasn't Killer Clowns From Outer Space that invaded the Freeman Coliseum, just the boys from Des Moines, Slipknot, who took no prisoners during their set in San Antonio on Sunday. While our writer Harrison enjoyed the show from a comfortable and relatively safe seat in the arena, I was braving the moshers coming over the barrier into the photo pit. Watch for Harrison's review later this week, but check out some pics from the war zone until then. Click here to check out the rest of the pics. photos by Jeff Barringer - Staff Photographer

AC/DC - January 9, 2009 Rogers Centre, Toronto, Ont.
You know the show is going to be good when the first thing you see is 45,000 AC/DC fans wearing red light-up devil horns!!! A great show to shoot with the photographers placed at the start of the 4 foot high catwalk and bright stage lights that let you shoot at 400 ISO. The show started with a great intro that I won't reveal in case you attend a show on the tour - and you should!
The band rocked out to the first single from Black Ice "Rock 'N ' Roll Train, followed by "Hell Ain't A Bad Place to Be" and "Back In Black". As the photographers were leaving they launched into another new song, "Big Jack". They don\'t show their age for a second, running around the stage and really looking like they're having a great time. Angus should be at an age where putting on the school boy outfit but he pulls it off and looks great. Brian still belts it out just as well as anyone and looks great for 61.
A fantastic start to the 2009 Toronto concert season!

Kirk Hammett of Metallica at Ozz Fest 2008 - more photos... photo by Jeff Barringer - Staff Photographer |
I think that if I died on January 1st 2009 I would leave here with a huge smile on my face. I don't know if it would even be possible to come close to shooting as many bands or so many major bands again. All told I was invited to shoot 231 artists and bands, covering everything from local talent to top shelf acts such as Metallica, ZZ Top, Rush, Ozzy Osbourne, Tom Petty, Judas Priest, Motley Crue and more. The list just seems to go on forever. Along the way I got to do some great festivals such as Mayhem Festival, The Warped Tour, Ozzfest, and the massive SXSW festival, and in turn I got to talk to, meet or just hang around with lots of cool musicians, culminating in a few rounds of jaeger shooters with Kerry King and his wife in the fall.
What a great year.
It would be hard for me to pick which one show was my favorite, there were so many good bands, so many good shows. Hand's down the messiest and probably one of the funnest was the GWAR show at La Zona Rosa. Probably the best show I saw this year is the only one I couldn't photograph and was extremely lucky to get invited to at all, the Foo Fighters Austin City Limits taping down at the studio on the UT campus. Playing in a small studio to a standing room only audience comprised mostly of Austin's music industry elite, we were treated to an unbelievable performance that I can't wait to experience again on HDTV when it airs on PBS in January.
I probably blew 100,000 raw photo frames and culled around 20,000 of the best to hang in our galleries. To check out all the bands I shot this year click on the link below to view the thumbnail gallery.

I've always liked Journey. I'll admit it. In fact I think everyone likes Journey. Those damned catchy, sappy songs with great guitar solos. They've certainly received more press in the last few years thanks to the use of "Don't Stop Believin" in the Sopranos series finale and the hiring of the You Tube sensation Arnel Pineda from the Philippines . Before the show I checked out the footage of Arnel singing with his old cover band The Zoo. Arnel can sing exactly like Steve Perry but you'd be surprised to hear how well he can impersonate other singers. He nails Bon Jovi, Boston, STP, Queen and lots of others.
The big test would be hearing him live, especially after Journey canceled the prior night because Arnel had a cold. Well, he was perfect. Journey put on a fantastic show with lots of energy and great interplay, as did their openers Cheap Trick and Heart. It's refreshing to hear great live singers in this era of "Auto Tune". The crowd loved every minute of it - especially the large Filipino crowd! Hopefully Journey can keep Arnel longer than their past few singers. They start another leg of their tour in November so check them out if they're headed your way.

Carlos Santana closed out the rock and roll concert season down at The Verizon Wireless in Selma and we got invited to come down and take pictures of the legendary guitarist and his band. It was a great way to close out the year, listening to classic rock tunes on a pleasant summer evening with the sun slowly setting over the hill country.
A look back at some of the shows we covered at the Verizon this year include The Warped Festival with dozens of bands, Motley Crue with Buck Cherry and Papa Roach, Slipknot, Disturbed, Dragonforce and more than a dozen other bands at the Mayhem Festival, Judas Priest and Heaven & Hell, and Tom Petty & Steve Winwood. That is a lot of good music.
Thanks go out to all the guys at Live Nation and the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Selma for helping us cover all this great music during the warm months. We are already looking forward to next spring to do it all over again!

Kerry King - Dimebag Tribute at Ozzfest - more photos
King Diamond - Dimebag Tribute at Ozzfest - more photos
| One of the big events of Saturday's Ozzfest was a 4 song performance of song tributes to "Dimebag" Darell Abbott, the former Pantera/Damage Plan guitarist gunned down onstage by a whacked out fan at a club in Ohio in 2004. Each song was performed by a different all-star tribute group, many artists making special provisions to appear.
I was able to positively identify all of the artists involved except the drummer on songs 1 & 2 who I suspect was Vinnie Paul Abbott, but I can't prove it with a picture (it was tough to see the drummer from the pit). I also can't prove Lars was there with a picture either. Below is the song list and the roster of each supergroup that performed:
Song 1 - Mouth For War - Pantera
Jamey Jasta - Hatebreed
Bob Zilla - Hellyeah/Damageplan/Nothinface
Tom Maxwell - Hellyeah/Nothingface
Nick Bowcott - Grim Reaper
Vinnie Paul Abbott - Pantera/Damageplan/Hell Yeah
Song 2 - A New Level - Pantera
Scott Ian - Anthrax
Max Cavallera - Soulfly/Sepultura/Cavellera Conspiracy
Nick Bowcott - Grim Reaper
King Diamond
unknown - drums (Vinnie Paul?)
Song 3 - Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd
Scott Ian - Anthrax
Jerry Cantrell - Alice In Chains
Mike Inez - Alice In Chains
Pearl Aday - Neverland Express
Lars Ulrich - Metallica
Song 4 - Fucking Hostile - Pantera
Kerry King - Slayer
Vinnie Paul Abbott - Pantera/Damageplan/Hell Yeah
Mike Inez - Alice In Chains
Chad Gray - Mudvayne/Hell Yeah
I am glad I got the opportunity to shoot this as it will be nearly impossible to get all these artists on the same stage again.
