Frank Erwin Center (Austin, Texas)

Moondog called to remind about this gig, and I want to thank him for helping me get the credentials to shoot this. Austin's Frank Erwin Center, known locally as the "Superdrum" or the Special Events Center, is the home to the University of Texas basketball program and, with a capacity of over 20,000 is the largest venue in Austin.
I got a close look at it when I registered for my U.T. classes as a freshman. The paint was still relatively fresh, Ronald Reagan was still president, and the lines of students wandering through its halls seemed endless. Over the years have seen an untold number of performances from both the cheap seats in the nosebleed section, all the way down to front row on the floor. Some of the bands I 've seen there include AC/DC (with Brian Jones), Nine Inch Nails, Marilyn Manson, Genesis , Rush, Yes, Neil Young, the Moody Blues, Van Halen, and a host of other acts throughout the seventies, eighties, and nineties.
I'd never been behind the scenes for any of the SEC events, and it was good to get a guided tour from UT's publicity department as we were ushered into, around, and through the venue. I could swear we passed the same maintenance guy three times on the way to the stage. For this show, we would actually be escorted from shooting location to shooting location by UT staff who got us through the various levels of security, which is nice because I'm getting pretty tired of fighting my way to the stage every time.

Antone's (Austin, Texas)

A long long time ago, in a decade far far away called "The Eighties," local (at that time) guitar hero Stevie Ray Vaughn and I were talking offstage one night. He had just finished a set opening for the then-hot Delbert McClinton at an Austin night club, now long gone, called Club Foot. This is back before he became "THE Stevie Ray Vaughn," and Stevie was still Austin's own private little secret.
We were chatting about some of the local musicians who he favored, and he mentioned that he was really impressed by this new kid known as "Little" Charlie Sexton. Charlie had been opening a number of sets at Antone's and other venues about town, and amazing people like Stevie with his prowess. At that time, Charlie was only thirteen or fourteen, and was already creating a strong buzz among Austin industry veterans, rightly being labeled a child prodigy. I made it a point to check out this guitar wunderkind, and after seeing him play at Antone's I, too, was impressed both with his skill with a guitar and with his look as well. With his Matt Dillon-like chiseled features, he had the look of a rock star.
Shortly after our chat, Stevie Ray Vaughn went on to fame and later misfortune, releasing his classic album Texas Flood, touring with David Bowie, and then much later dying tragically while en-route to play at Alpine Valley. Stevie's everlasting legacy is that his rise to stardom lifted all of Austin's musical boats, helping to make Antone's and Austin's live music scene legendary, and propelling a number of local artists into the national spotlight. Charlie Sexton, and to a lesser extent his equally talented younger brother Will Sexton, were direct benefactors of some of that legacy. Charlie went on to his own mainstream success with his 1985 album release of Pictures For Pleasure, released when he was just sixteen, charting the hit single "Beats So Lonely," and setting the hearts of thousands, if not millions, of teen girls aflutter.

La Zona Rosa (Austin, Texas)
also: Dropping Daylight, Hurt
Austin’s La Zona Rosa was the alt music hot spot the night of January 20, when people at the Army of Anyone concert got the added bonus of two short but sweet performances by surprise guests the Meat Puppets - their first time to play together since 2002. Dropping Daylight kicked off the evening playing about six alternative-rock sets, then the band Hurt took the stage shortly after, playing eight harder alternative-metal pieces, which brought more energy to the crowd. Army of Anyone was in Austin promoting their new self-titled album, and they made for a good show.

This must be the year of improbable reunions. The Meat Puppets, Iggy & The Stooges, the Police, and now Van Halen? Breaking a 20 year standoff, Billboard is reporting that Van Halen will re-unite with David Lee Roth for a 40 city tour this summer. Eddie Van Halen's son Wolfie will step in on the bass for the shows. The tour will open in, of course, Las Vegas. Hopefully Dave can pull himself away from the Liberace museum long enough to grace us with his customary " I'm so drunk I forgot the words to this song...". Dave, good to have you back, feathers and all.
Chris and Ollie of the Zico Chain have confirmed to the staff here that they will be playing Austin's SXSW music festival in March, and will be touring the U.K. in support of their new album due out on Hassle Records later this summer. They promised to bring us a good balty and some nan bread if they can get it through customs. Other SXSW announcements include Mastodon, I Am X, Mike Aiken, The Moaners, The Village Green, The Pipettes, Interpol, The Octopus Project, Ghostland Observatory, Thunderbirds Are Now! ....(only 1490 +/- bands left to go...) Still no word on that nagging Chili Pepper rumor that is circulating.
Willie Nelson, who is currently touring Europe, has announced a U.S. Tour billed as the "Last Of The Breed" showcasing Willie, Merle Haggard, and Ray Price. The tour kicks off in Prescott Arizona on March 9th, making it back to Austin in time to collide head on with SXSW for 2 nights, though it's not a SXSW show, before ambling off up the east coast, ending in the midwest on March 25 at the Rosemont Theater just outside of Chicago. Tickets are going fast
Happy 25th birthday to Metal Blade Records, big friends of club kingsnake. They have a bunch of artists heading out including Unearth who is opening for Slayer on their tour which starts this weekend. Psyopus is also out on tour for Metal Blade now, working their way from Texas, up the east coast, ending in Arlington Heights, Illinois on February 25th. Finally Travis and the guys from Cattle Decapitation will headline a 3 show tour in Mexico in February.

I covered the Lucy Lawless concert ... you know, the actress/singer who played Xena: Warrior Princess for six years and then took the country by storm last year on the cheesy but entertaining Celebrity Duets ... for another publication. And when JeffB suggested I review it here, I gave him a skeptical look and said, "Jeff, honey, trust me, there is nothing 'alternative' about Lucy Lawless' music."
He shook his head. Well, perhaps I should say he shook it metaphorically, because we were on the phone. I have no actual knowledge of what he was doing with his head during this conversation.
"She's 'alternative' because of Xena," he told me.
And because I'll basically take any excuse to talk about Xena, anywhere, anytime, I smiled and agreed.
Lucy Lawless' two sold-out concerts on January 14 and 15 at LA's famous Roxy Theater were strategically scheduled during the 12th Annual Xena: Warrior Princess convention in Burbank, and were accordingly full of Lucy's biggest fans. That might be why her Saturday night performance was not plagued by the nerves that occasionally weakened her voice on Celebrity Duets - Lawless' fans love her and she loves them, and there's nothing like love to lubricate the vocal cords.
The love was so palpable that even the Roxy tech guys mentioned it, telling actor/director Michael Hurst that they had never seen such a fan reaction, even when Springsteen was there.
The two opening numbers, Muse's "Feeling Good" and Etta James' "Jump into My Fire," suffered from major sound mix problems, and finally Lawless asked her audience to turn around and face the sound booth. These folks, she said sweetly, “Want to hear me. It worked, and the next day she laughed about it, saying being threatened with 500 angry Xena fans is “worse than being threatened by one angry Xena, because Xena has one ounce of compassion."

Authorities have confirmed that former Social Distortion bassist Brent Liles was struck and killed on January 18 as he attempted to bicycle across southern California's Orange Freeway in Placentia California.
Liles was bass player for the band from 1981 to 1984, quitting, along with drummer Derek O'Brien, during a New Year's performance in 1983. Liles later played in a number of punk bands including Agent Orange. Brent played on the band's Mommy's Little Monster album. Brent Liles was 43.
Marshall has always been an oddity in the music business. They seldom offer signature model amplifiers, and have rarely given amps to artists for free.
At Winter NAMM in Anaheim, Marshall announced the new JCM800 2203KK Head, inspired by and built to the specifications of Slayer's Kerry King. Kerry joins the elite ranks of Jimi Hendrix, Slash and Zakk Wylde as one of the few artists to have a signature Marshall amplifier.
Marshall has also announced a second Zakk Wylde signature amp. The Limited Edition MG15MSZW is a 15 watt micro stack with vintage style grill cloth and bullseye graphics that set this amp apart from its stock counterpart.

Heaven & Hell, the band put together by Ronny James Dio, Geezer Butler, Tony Iommi, and Vinny Appice, will kick off their tour season with eleven Canadian shows, along with a one-night-only performance at New York's Radio City Music Hall, starting March 11 and ending March 30. Further shows in the U.S., Asia and Europe have yet to be announced. Megadeth as well as Down with Phil Anselmo will be opening.
Rage Against the Machine, Bjork, and The Red Hot Chili Peppers have all been confirmed to headline this year's Coachella festival. Also at Coachella this year are Peaches, Sonic Youth, Interpol, Ozomatli, Roky Erikson and the Explosives, Kings of Leon, Willie Nelson and a rare appearance by Crowded House. The huge list of other bands reads like an all-star indie lineup. Club kingsnake will try to send at least one of our staffers to cover this year's expanded three-day event - the first time Coachella has ever scheduled over three days.
Finally, Crosby, Stills, and Nash will also be touring down under with a nine date tour of Australia and New Zealand.

Cris Kirkwood of the Meat Puppets and Dean DeLeo of Army of Anyone onstage at La Zona Rosa 1/20/07 photo by staff photographer jeff barringer |
You hear about them happening, you hope it happens when you're there, but usually you hear about it afterwards and turn green with envy because you missed it. Every once in a great while, completely unannounced, and to the surprise of the crowd and often the venue, a great band shows up at someone else's gig and wants to jam. I often talk about the Mick and Keith showing up at Antone's many years ago and jamming, and how I missed it, and how envious I was of the guys that were there and got to taste a little bit of history. It never seemed to happen at any of the shows I attended. Until tonight.
I got an invite to cover the Army of Anyone show (ex-Filter and Stone Temple Pilots members) at La Zona Rosa from the band, and when I set out on a cold, drizzly Saturday evening, I was pretty much plugged in to it being just another show, albeit by a really great band, but nothing with what could be termed "historical" significance.
When I arrived I found it was just me, Jay West and Sean Claes from Insite magazine working the photo pit, but something was odd. There was a buzz, an electricity running through the air that you could smell, taste, and feel. Asking around a bit, weird rumors abounded about surprise guests showing up at the soundcheck asking to jam with the band. Cornering a couple of my Direct Events contacts at the venue, they quickly fessed up, confirming that there were in fact to be special guests, unannounced guests, and that Army of Anyone would be jamming with the legendary, newly reformed, Meat Puppets, Curt Kirkwood, his brother Cris Kirkwood, with Ted Marcus from NYC who is the drummer on the upcoming record.
And that is exactly what happened.
Midway through their set, they stopped, invited the Puppets onstage, jammed with them on one song, then let them wail away on their own for their next. Awesome. Incredible. Historic.
After the set I got a chance to talk with both Curt and Cris and they confirmed for me a forthcoming album, a Meat Puppet documentary AND they will be appearing at Austin's upcoming SXSW 2007, although plans are very rough at this point. Look for a video interview with the Puppets real soon!
Cris, Curt, glad to have you back... you have been missed!
Watch for a review of this show by Alexis Allo soon!
Check out the full set of images in Our Concert Photo Gallery
Please Note: This article has been corrected thanks to input from our readers. Earlier we incorrectly identified the drummer for this set as Derrick Bostrom, it was in fact Ted Marcus.

La Zona Rosa (Austin, Texas)
also: Albert Hammond Jr.
Fans of the band Incubus got a real treat this week when they brought their HUGE entourage (I counted four buses, two semis and at least two vans) into Austin's La Zona Rosa nightclub, in what for them would be considered an intimate set.
Parking wasn't the only thing that was limited as anyone approaching the venue was destined to be accosted by roving gangs of ticketless teenage girls.
Seriously.
I got asked well over 100 times if I had extra tickets, and what tickets were available from the few scalpers were going for $200 and up. One individual was turned away after buying a phony "will call" for $500 off of EBay. According to James Wetz, member of Direct Events publicity team, the online tickets for the show sold out in an incredible 12 seconds.
Mike Einziger of Incubus at La Zona Rosa photo by staff photographer jeff barringer |
Was the show worth it? Certainly the hard core Incubus fans that got in thought so, but what did they get for their money? An incredibly tight performance by Incubus for one thing. Both the sound mix, and the band's performance, were album perfect and flawless. Fans also got a set list to die for. Interspersing songs from their new Light Grenade album with songs many would consider their "greatest hits," the band started off slowly with "Quicksand," then launched into "Kiss to Send Us Off," and then "Wish You Were Here."
Our three songs expended, we photographers were shooed out of the pit, and I left the venue to secure my cameras. I missed "Have You Ever" and "Paper Shoes," but the walk to my vehicle was accompanied by the off key singing of the ticketless teen girls' choir that had formed outside the venue gates.
I returned just in time to catch them mid-song in "Anna Molly" from the new album. They kept on playing, stopping to switch to acoustic for "New Skin" and "Drive." Other crowd favorites included "When it Comes," "Dig," and "A Crow Left of Murder," as well as both "Light Grenades" and "Earth To Bella" from the new disc.
Brandon Boyd of Incubus at La Zona Rosa photo by staff photographer jeff barringer |
By the time Incubus moved into their encore, the show was well over an hour, and they finished up their set with "Pendulous Threads," "Pistola," and "Megalomaniac," doing a total of nineteen songs. The audience was ecstatic, crowd surfing the entire night. Incubus has a very complex and intricate sound that pushes the boundaries beyond the mainstream "pop" world, begging, borrowing, and stealing from a variety of genres. It was neat to see them shift back and forth from pop, to metal, to hip hop, and do it so effortlessly and note perfectly. I don't think anyone was left disappointed.
I was not able to cover the opener, Albert Hammond Jr., touring solo rather than with the rest of The Strokes. He sounded pretty good from the bar .
It was great to run into Jay West and Moondog working the show; it's always fun to compare notes and pictures side by side. Thanks to James Wetz and Emily at Direct Events for hooking me up with the photo pass and to the guys in Incubus for letting me shoot their show.

The Deftones fifth album, Saturday Night Wrist, released Halloween 2006, is loaded with 12 tracks of aggressive music, adding a new twist to their sound. Lyrically, this is a darker Deftones CD compared to past releases. This Sacramento-based quintet attempts to change up their style and they succeeded. The CD embodies a dynamic play list with tantalizing vocals and mid-tempo beats with Tool-influenced drum solos. They have definitely kept their “Deftonian sound fans know so well. Chingo Moreno’s hushed vocals layered atop a massive guitar wall take their musical experimentation to a newer, harder place while not forsaking their trademark sound.
The bulk of the album highlights Moreno’s vocal range, crying over heavy guitar licks and wildly paced drum variations. Their single, "Hole in the Earth," leads off the CD with an explosive blending of both bass and electric guitars with hard hitting drums working in unison to bring you the Deftones’ latest of works. Moreno’s voice eases its way in after about thirty seconds of instrumentals, producing a song that goes beyond the vocal realm of what listeners would expect. "Beware the Water" is a great example of the darker lyrical pieces on the CD. Chingo Moreno comments on this song in a Rolling Stone interview stating, “The lyrics are a warning against the temptation of women, drugs, alcohol or any other vice. It's quite dark."
"Cherry Waves" is a meditation on trust and its inherent limitations. It has a catchy chorus with dreamy guitar strums. There are two “scream-o songs, "Rapture" and "RATS!RATS!RATS!". "Rapture" defines the Deftones’ heavy metal experimentation, but listeners beware: a lyric sheet is required, “thankfully enclosed. "RATS!RATS!RATS!", a song about an old actress gone crazy named Frances Farmer, is another Moreno screamer, incorporating peculiar “non-royalty-receiving cricket sounds towards the song's closure.

I Hate Sally announced today that they will be dropping out of several upcoming East Coast dates with Cancer Bats.
Apparently frontwoman Dee Prescott had her foot accidently stomped by Bassist Dan Vokey. " Dee had her foot x-rayed this morning and it turns out that 3 toes are broken and her foot is fractured which means she has to get a cast, or a cast-like boot, and can't walk on it for 6 weeks minimum." said a statement from the band.
The band does hope to participate in four shows later this month in Montreal, Ottawa, London, and Toronto.
Here's wishing Dee a speedy recovery.

Why they don't Suck: I saw this band live for the first time on January 13th, 2007, and they severely kicked my ass. I then gave their latest CD a spin and felt like I was privy to something great. The brothers Bailey have crafted a sound that draws from many influences but is at the same time unique. Yeah they are damn heavy, but there are enough hooks to make the music accessible to the masses.

The Academy Theatre, Lindsay Ontario. December 23rd, 2006.
Let me paint a picture for you. An historic theatre in the heart of town, over 100 years old and beautifully renovated. Where better to enjoy the local orchestra's latest performance or to see the most recent Broadway revival?
What happens when the same venue hosts a Christmas punk show?
As JJ and I drove up to the theatre, it looked closed. Only upon closer inspection did we notice some kids going in a side door. That's where we headed, and as we approached music could be heard coming from within. Once in the door, we were immediately confronted with a table blocking our way. Katie from Underground Operations spotted me and waved us in. But where were we supposed to go? The only path I could see was the stairs to the stage, and this was packed with kids. My size often has its advantages, and I began muscling my way up the stairs to figure out what the hell was going on.
