The Plain White T's are a band your mom would approve of. In fact, judging by the number of chaperones slipping over to the the bar during the show, many of them did - and brought their teens and tweens out to enjoy a Sunday set at La Zona Rosa. Although they didn't attract a huge crowd, the T's drew an enthusiastic one, many members of which were later found outside by the tour bus getting autographs from the band. A Chicago-based emo band, they all looked like they would be more at home working at your local video store rather than fronting a rock and roll band, although ptrong performances by frontman Tom Higgenson give them a solid base to work from. On their first headlining tour, they are building a widespread following.

Dear and The Headlights opened the set, and for their first three songs they had my attention, but seemed to loose that steam after about the fourth or fifth song. James from Direct Events, a fan of the band, blamed it on mix problems, and that's possible as the vocals seemed to disappear when I left the pit. What I heard from the pit sounded pretty good though. Maybe next time they'll get a better mix.

I really really liked the next band, Lovedrug, out of Ohio. Lead vocalist Michael Shepard has a distinctive look and sound that should help the band set themselves apart. Shepard's ability to transition from piano to guitar is a treat, and their songs are well matched to his abilities. That's not to leave the rest of the band out for the kudos; they put in an equally solid performance. This is definitely a band to catch if they come to town.

Boys Night Out is fantastic and their live performance is worth seeing. Red-bearded vocalist Connor Lovat-Fraser jumped and ran and flung himself about the stage like some Gaelic Jim Morrison on a meth binge during Mardi Gras. Seriously! He wouldn't stay in frame long enough for the camera to even focus on most occasions. After the first song I gave up, just pointing the camera blindly and snapping as fast as I could hoping that at some point he would bound back into frame. Geez, I thought Canadians were supposed to be more mellow than that.
This is a great band and every time they hit town I'll try to cover them. One guy I talked to afterwards hated them, called them screamers. I loved em, thought they were the band of the night, lots of energy and excitement. Good sound with a bite. This is a great band to see live.

I sure like working with the guys at La Zona Rosa and Direct Events, they help make it easy for me to get my job done. They were able to hook me up with access to this show and even helped me look for a memory card I dropped afterwards. LZR & DE Rule!
