ALEX*CUBA MOD CLUB THEATRE – TORONTO
FOR RELEASE: MONDAY, JANUARY 25th, 2010
SATURDAY, APRIL 10TH, 2010
MOD CLUB THEATRE – TORONTO
Doors: 7:00PM Show: 8:00PM
This is the story of guitarist, singer, and songwriter Alex Cuba, who came into his musical own in the Canadian north and whose Cuban soul rock power trio flies in the face of conventional notions of what Latin music can be: gentle, hip, wry, and uplifting, with a twist of funk where Marvin Gaye meets Jaco Pastorius. His trademark sugarcane-sweet melodies, pop-soul hooks and rock chords subtly subvert commonly held notions of what Cuban music is. Alex is on the vanguard, crafting a cross-cultural sound that mirrors his geographical journey.
Cuba’s Canadian evolution transformed him, from a kid in a small town near Havana, into a fearless independent musician stringing his beloved Gibson guitars with the heaviest, bassiest steel strings (which he plays without a pick). Cuba’s songs break the language barrier on a regular basis, wooing fans who might otherwise have limited interest in Latin or Cuban music and who don’t speak Spanish. “When I went to Canada, I found this place very open, a new country, in many ways,” Cuba reflects. “Canadians will embrace any form of art, as long as it’s natural or honest. So I found a lot of space here to be myself.”
In the digital space, Alex Cuba has had four iTunes Singles of the Week (Canada, U.S., Japan, Netherlands), has charted on various iTunes charts in Canada, the U.S. and Japan, has built an impressive online community and has had major content features on Myspace, Yahoo!, AOL and other portals.
In between tour dates and the Nelly Furtado collaborations, the two-time Juno winner recorded his third album at Baker Studios in Victoria, B.C. The self-titled project was released October 27th in Canada and is scheduled for a Spring 2010 U.S. release. Featuring surprising new grooves, new electric guitar inflections and varying tempos and structures, the self titled album is an important step in Alex Cuba’s ongoing musical revolution.
With a heart as big as his retro 'fro, Cuba takes it all in stride and focuses on what he does best: crafting songs that cut through linguistic and cultural barriers like a machete through sugarcane.
Be sure to Go With the Fro’ Saturday April 10th and see Alex Cuba hit the stage at The Mod Club Theatre!
