All that was missing was a copy of Wired Magazine, naked muddy people, and a large burning effigy.
San Francisco based Musician / Producer / DJ Lorin Ashton brought his freeform project Bassnectar as well as some really really big bass cabinets and a smoke machine that the military could use to hide a division of tanks, to what had to have been a sold out crowd at La Zona Rosa. Bolstered by a late set that allowed the camp followers of Widespread Panic to make it after their show ended out at The Backyard, the line for tickets was still 50 strong at 11:30pm, long after his thumping spiraling beats had started, but far from the 2:00am end time for the set.
The show was very much a throwback to the Rave parties of the 90's for me, the lights, frenetic dancing, colorful costumes of the audience members, all reminders of the days before CNN covered Burning Man.
Opening the show were Oakland, Ca. based DJs Beats Antique followed by Austin based DJ Govinda, both longtime stalwarts on their respective scenes. Govinda's set was further highlighted by having a belly dancer join him onstage. With all the smoke it was very difficult to take pictures so I spent most of my time wheeling about in a haze induced stupor along with the rest of the audience, letting the rhythm and the beat take us wherever it wanted.
