club.kingsnake.com :: Christie Keith is a writer, editor, and blogger living in California. She grew up in the musical wasteland of the 70s, but one day in high school she heard the wonder that was Patti Smith's Radio Ethiopia and then everything was all right. From Smith she found Iggy Pop who led to early Bowie and the Velvet Underground, then to Robert Fripp and Brian Eno, who led backwards to glam rock and forwards to the Talking Heads. In her somewhat gloriously, somewhat tawdrily misspent youth, she was the manager of Wilma, an early 80s San Francisco punk band, from its formation through the release of its first single (1981) and album (1984) on Subterranean Records. She also wrote lyrics for them, including a song still in the rotation on college radio, "Fast Fascist." Living in San Francisco also meant the Dead Kennedys, Subterranean label-mates Flipper, and dozens, hundreds, of local punk and post-punk bands. She spent way too much time at Rough Trade Records, though, where she started reading New Musical Express, which meant she started liking British new wave, and from there it was only a very small step to drinking the Kool-Aid and listening to synth bands; blame it on Eurythmics' In the Garden and the hypnotic influence of "Never Gonna Cry Again." Annie Lennox has a lot to answer for. Her musical downfall continued as, after resisting it for an entire decade, she got slipped some new form of Kool-Aid and now actually loves dance music and wastes way too much of her disposable income at BeatPort. But we don't talk about that at Club Kingsnake, and the rest of the writers are planning an intervention soon. Other things she likes are politics, dogs, and shoes. She also blogs at Dogged but it's NC-17, NSFW, and oh yeah, way liberal. And she sometimes writes about dance music, too, so enter at your own risk. Read Christie's posts. |
